True Cinderella: A Rococo Inspired Shoot | Chicago Fashion Photographer

With a creative dream team, I joined Rachel Goldberg of Thanatos Courture to shoot her garments about the original Cinderella story. With poise and grace, the beautiful models emphasized the visceral and dramatic real story that varies greatly from a Disney fairytale. Using subtle hints to reference bold moments in the story, the garments offer a unique aesthetic on a seductive interpretation of the tale. Keep reading for more details!

Rachel Goldberg, an independent Chicago designer now living in California was the talent that gave birth to this amazing garment collection. They are one-of-a-kind masterpieces based on the original Cinderella story. The series is named “True Cinderella” to reflect how the collection aims to expose the traditional, cruel, gruesome story of Cinderella in contrast to Disney’s happily-ever-after interpretation. With grace and elegance, I tried to emphasize the hints Rachel put in her design to the original story. The best example of this can be found in the stepsisters’ details. Their shoes are adorned with concentrated red rhinestones to reference how the sisters mutilated their feet to fit the slipper, and there are black birds tangled in their hair to illustrate how birds came during Cinderella’s wedding to punish them with blindness (also shown with their red velvet eye patches).

I feel that this series offers a unique aesthetic on not only a “well known” story, but it uses my personal style to deliver a visual treat. All of the models were stunningly gorgeous (yes, even the prince was pretty) and carried themselves with such poise. It fit the vibe given off by the stylized garments flawlessly. The overall look strives to be daring yet seductive while exposing the world to something it’s never seen before.

The shoot itself was a great all day affair. My team came together like a well oiled machine, touching up makeup, making sure the garments were intact, blasting the smoke machine to add a soft haze to a whole section of photos, lighting tweaks, and endless collaboration. A great addition to the atmosphere was how much everyone enjoyed being there. Even when the first two models (Cinderella and the Prince) were done, they stuck around for a while to watch what happened next. The hard work paid off, and the shoot was featured by several magazines and blogs (Unfolded, Glassbook, Dark Beauty, Trend Hunter). Check out some of my favorite shots below the credits to see how the shoot turned out for yourself.

Trash the Dress Photos at an Abandoned Church in Gary Indiana | Brittany + Jim

gary indiana abandoned church trash the dress photo

This was my first time photographing in the famous abandoned church in Gary Indiana.  One of my oldest friends, Brittany Bindrim got married! As I was part of the wedding, our friend Kirsten Miccoli shot the event. My wedding gift to her and her husband Jim was this incredible “trash the dress” session. Its always nice to add on to your wedding photos, and you have that opportunity to do that with a trash the dress shoot. Not only is it more fashion-photo based and focused solely on the couple, but you don’t have to worry about ruining your dress the whole time. Honestly, when are you going to wear that thing again? You’ll keep it forever of course, but its fun to go out into the world and fearlessly model it for an interesting set of photographs. Brittany’s dress was a great find. She found it at Laurel Bridal, a premier Chicago wedding boutique. As an artist herself, she chose one that really stood out, and not only was it a gorgeous addition to her gorgeous wedding by the dress’ black accents made it perfect for her trash the dress shoot in the somewhat gritty setting we chose that embodies the term “urban decay”.

The way Brittany and Jim met will always be a fun story. They both went to college at U of I, when Jim’s band Iscintilla was looking for a singer, that was the first place he started his search. Brittany found out about it and went to audition where they met for the first time. She made it into the band, and they are still both in it today. It’s played a big role in their lives, and the proof can be found through the tattoo on Brittany’s shoulder. It’s the band’s logo, and every member if Iscintilla has it. Brittany’s creative drive doesn’t stop there though, she is an independent illustrator and designer under her company; Black Dove Design Company.

While her actual wedding was held at the Zhou B Art Center, the church we held the shoot in is called the City Methodist church in Gary, Indiana. Its an abandoned church, originally built in the 20s. Its become an increasingly popular spot over the last few years for photographers and urban explorers alike. I found the setting to be an incredible spot, with a stage, debris, crazy stairs, and blown out windows, it was a sight to behold.  That church gave me more than photographs too. That day I found a kitten wandering around, clearly alone. I ended up taking her home and adopting her! That kitten has grown into being my cat, Amelia. She is a total sweetheart and so curious about everything in the world. One of her favorite things to do is sit on the desk while I edit and watch the mouse move and make changes. I thought she might outgrow that, but continues to try and get between the screen and I all the time.

Here is the beautiful main room of the City Methodist abandoned church in Gary Indiana. This church is really a photographer’s dream, so many interesting views and rooms to capture.

Steel Reserve | Futuristic/Retro Shoot | Chicago Fashion Editorial with Clara Rae

I absolutely loved photographing gorgeous and unique faced, Clara Rae in this futuristic/retro Chicago fashion editorial shoot. The whole creative team had such great chemistry and a strong vision. The end result was published in two well-known fashion magazines. Keep reading to find out about all the details.

Back in September I worked on a shoot that I designed to challenge myself into going farther than I normally do. My aesthetic goal was incorporate both retro and futuristic themes without them contradicting each other. The makeup, the hats, the hair, it all alludes to the 1920’s while rocketing the look into the future with the use of edgy color, heavily textured and metallic backgrounds, dynamic lighting, alternative shooting, all with an overall gist of beauty, darkness, and strength. My model for the shoot, Clara, emotionally expressed these themes flawlessly. It was the first time I worked with her, and the way she moves was so fitting. Towards the bottom of this post I have a video that was filmed that day to give you a look of what it was like to be there. You can see for yourself this way just how well the atmosphere came together.
This was also the first time I collaborated with a nail artist. Ashley Crowe aka “Astrowifey” went above and beyond my expectations. She designed the most beautiful nails on the spot that perfectly matched our theme. Sharp, holographic, and exploding out of the box. I think this was one of the details that really helped rocket the shoot further. This was also the first time I built as many extravagant sets as I did. Using primarily metal and plastic materials, I had a blast mounting, hanging, collaging, and putting together these tiny worlds. I made 6 sets in total.
One of the best parts of this shoot was how it all came together after it was over. I enjoyed the editing process on such a dynamic look. I used a lot of alternative shooting methods so almost all of the crazy things you see in the photos are actually done in person using only in-camera editing. The biggest challenge here was balancing the light sources from a projector and standard strobes. On top of that it was published by two magazines. Glassbook featured it as one of their online editorials and Ashley Crowe had it published in Tipsy Magazine, a nail art mag that gave it a huge spread. I can’t thank my team enough for making this one such a good experience.

Here’s my team for that day and their websites:
Photographer: Emily Gualdoni
Hair Stylist / Makeup Artist: Kat DeJesus
Manicurist / Nail Artist: Ashley Crowe
Wardrobe Stylist: Sararose Krenger
Wardrobe Designer: Stix and Roses
Accessory Designer: Rachel Frank (Hats were vintage)
Model: Clara Rae
Photographer assistants – Kaitlyn Hope Polles and Rio Wray

“Mirror, Mirror” – Chicago Fashion Editorial

Its been a while, but I’m finally back to blogging! I wanted to share a few photos with you from a recent series I call “Mirror, Mirror.” It has gotten some attention as the cover for June’s issue of w25 Magazine alongside its inclusion in Impostor Magazine. Being published is always rewarding, and it was an honor for something that started as a small shoot to become something larger. As a Chicago fashion photographer I work with some incredibly talented people; this time around my team consisted of Loni Hale working her magic on hair and makeup and Ashley Barlow as my stylist (both with Factor Modeling Management). The model herself is the beautiful Ayssa Nastic of Muse Model Management. I’ve worked with all of these people before aside from the new addition of my assistant Kaitlyn Hope, but this time we really struck something magically dark and beautiful.

My aesthetic inspiration for this shoot came from the recent film Snow White and the Huntsman’s evil Queen Ravenna played by Charlize Theron. I channeled her severe demeanor while incorporating my own edgy vision. Ayssa was perfect, firstly shes a fantastic model, and shes also a ton of fun to work with. She was enjoying getting into character and boldly interacted with her accessories and surroundings.

I hope you enjoy the images as much as I enjoyed making them, and look for more posts coming soon!
